La Luz Chapter

Recognition of member accomplishments plays a large role in the La Luz Chapter. Our members are very active in the National Organization. In our chapter, we have a past national president and past national secretary-treasurer, who are both former Top Ten Business Women of ABWA and ABWA Ambassadors.

The La Luz Chapter of ABWA meets once a month where we enjoy a good dinner, network with other members, conduct chapter business, and listen to professional development or market relevant presentations. Past programs have included: “Getting People to Listen” presented by Martha Burk, Money Editor of Ms. Magazine and “Team Building” by Ingrid Baker.

The La Luz Chapter of ABWA participates in the ABWA National Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund (SBMEF) Scholarship program. Members can receive reimbursement for Business Skills Tuition and we can award an Outright Grant of up to $1,500 each year to a woman who is enrolled as a Junior, Senior or Graduate Student. The tuition reimbursement for members is up to 50% of the total for tuition, fees and books. We have also created the “La Luz ABWA Endowment Fund” at UNM.  This year we will be evaluating funding sources for the Endowment.

Chapter members are also very active in the community. As a chapter we have a charitable campaign for a non-profit agency. Past campaigns include: sponsoring a family at Christmas with a tree, decorations and gifts; donating money to a local hospitality center for the homeless, and providing money and essentials to the local battered women’s shelter. Individual members are currently or have in the past volunteered in a variety of non-profit organizations including: The Ronald McDonald House, The Albuquerque Sister City program, The New Mexico State PTA, TEAM in Training, The Barrett House, and United Way.

The La Luz Chapter of ABWA participates in the ABWA National Events. In 1983, 1995, and 2007 La Luz participated in the planning and running of Spring Conferences that were held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2001, a La Luz member chaired the National Women’s Leadership Conference that was sponsored by all the Albuquerque area chapters. Several members of the La Luz Chapter attended the 2007 ABWA National Women’s Leadership Conference held September 20 – 22, 2007 in Greensboro, North Carolina. This year the 2008 National Women’s Leadership Conference will be held in Covington, Kentucky.  The La Luz Chapter of ABWA is a member of District VI and several members attended the 2008 Spring Conference May 2 & 3, 2008 in Englewood, Colorado. The 2009 Spring Conference will be March 20 & 21, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona

The La Luz Chapter of ABWA is also an active member of the New Mexico ABWA Area Council. The Chapter is represented by a board member at the area council meetings. The Area Council sponsors New Mexico Fiesta weekend and observes ABW Day with a luncheon each year. New Mexico Fiesta ’08 was chaired by a La Luz member.
